CCP exam breakdown — is the management section really worth 40% of the weight?
Passed the CCP last month after a rough first attempt. First time I went in with 4 weeks of prep and walked out with a 64% — needed a 70% to pass. The management and project topics absolutely destroyed me because I'd spent almost all my time on the technical domains. Second attempt, 8 weeks of focused prep, scored a 77%. Lesson learned the hard way.
The organizational behavior and IT management questions are scenario-heavy. You're not being asked to define terms, you're being asked to evaluate decisions in context. I found that thinking through each scenario from a risk-and-tradeoff angle worked better than trying to match it to a specific framework. Some questions felt almost like ethics questions more than technical ones.
Data and information management was my strongest section, probably because I've been doing database work for 6 years. Systems concepts and theory questions were manageable with moderate prep. I put in about 2 hours a day on weekdays, 4 hours on weekends for the second attempt. The weight distribution on this exam really punishes people who treat it as a pure technical certification.
The project management pieces overlap with PMP concepts but it's not identical content. I have a PMP and still got caught on some CCP-specific framing around IT governance that doesn't appear in the PMI material.
The management weight surprised me too. I went in thinking systems architecture questions would dominate and ended up spending half my mental energy on the org and people side. It's a classic trap for people coming from a technical background.
Six years in databases and you still found it tough on the first attempt — what resources did you use the second time around? Looking for something with more practice scenarios for the management and project sections specifically.
Do you know if the exam is adaptive or fixed-length? I've seen conflicting information and I'm trying to calibrate how many questions to expect across domains before I schedule my date.
