Finally passed my CCH exam after two attempts — here's what actually helped

I just got my results back this morning and I'm still kind of in shock — passed with an 84! Took me two tries though, so I wanted to share what made the difference the second time around for anyone else grinding through this. First attempt I went in way too confident after 3 weeks of casually reviewing the ASWB study materials. Big mistake. The CCH isn't just about memorizing definitions — there are so many application-style questions that trip you up if you haven't actually practiced working through scenarios.

What changed everything for me was committing to a real study schedule: 90 minutes every weekday for six weeks, plus full practice exams on weekends. I used a CCH practice test bank religiously — doing timed sets of 50 questions and tracking which domains I kept missing. Turns out I was consistently weak on compensation structures and benefit plan regulations, which I'd basically skimmed over.

If you're building your CCH study guide from scratch, seriously prioritize FLSA, ERISA basics, and total rewards strategy. Those three areas made up probably a third of what I saw on the actual exam. Happy to answer questions if anyone's in the middle of prep right now.

Congrats!! I'm sitting for mine in about seven weeks and this is exactly the kind of post I needed. I've been doing the same thing — casually reviewing without really testing myself. Going to find a decent CCH practice test this weekend and start tracking my weak spots by domain. Did you use any specific question bank or just the official WorldatWork prep materials?

Two attempts is nothing to be embarrassed about, honestly. I know three people with HR certs who had to retake the CCH. The application questions are brutal if you work in a smaller company and haven't dealt with things like deferred comp plans firsthand. My biggest exam tip: don't skip the math. Base pay calculations, compa-ratio stuff — I underestimated how much straight computation shows up.

84 is a solid score, nice work. For anyone else reading — the WorldatWork modules are dense but worth going through at least once before you switch to practice questions. The terminology they use on the real exam matches their materials almost exactly.
