Finally passed my CCAP exam after two attempts — here's what actually helped

So I just got my results back yesterday and I finally passed the Certified Credentialing and Access Professional exam on my second try. First attempt I scored a 68 when you need a 70 to pass — absolutely devastating. I'd been working in patient access for about four years at a mid-size regional hospital and honestly thought my on-the-job experience would carry me through. It didn't.

What changed the second time around was actually being systematic about it. I spent about six weeks this time using a proper CCAP study guide instead of just reviewing my notes from work. The biggest gaps for me were the regulatory sections — HIPAA nuances, payer compliance, and the financial counseling competencies. I also found a solid CCAP practice test online that helped me get used to how the questions are worded, which is genuinely different from just knowing the material.

Curious if anyone else here is prepping for CCAP right now or recently went through it. What study resources actually made a difference for you? I want to help the next person avoid my first-attempt mistakes.

Congrats on passing! I'm sitting for mine in about 8 weeks and this is reassuring to read. The regulatory and compliance sections are exactly what I'm nervous about too. I've been doing about an hour a day of studying and using a mix of the NAHAM prep materials and a few practice tests I found. Did you find the actual exam questions were similar in style to the practice tests you used, or pretty different?

I passed mine about 18 months ago and the exam tips that helped me most were around time management during the test itself. You get roughly a minute per question and it's easy to get stuck. I flagged anything I wasn't sure about and came back — ended up changing three answers on review and two of those were right the second time. Also the financial assistance and charity care section was bigger than I expected. Don't underestimate it.

Two attempts is nothing to be embarrassed about — I know people who've taken it three times. The pass rate for first-timers isn't as high as NAHAM's marketing might imply. You passing is what counts. Good luck to everyone else prepping!
