Failed CASAS twice — what finally worked for my third attempt?

So I've been trying to pass the CASAS for about eight months now and honestly I was starting to lose hope. First attempt I scored a 215 on the reading section when I needed a 221, second time I got a 218. My ESL program requires at least a level D to move into the advanced class and I really don't want to wait another semester.

What finally clicked for me was actually slowing down on the reading passages instead of rushing. I'd been treating it like a race. I also spent about two weeks doing a structured CASAS practice test every other day — timed, no interruptions, treating it like the real thing. The math section was always my stronger area so I focused almost entirely on reading comprehension and life-skills vocabulary.

If anyone has a solid study guide recommendation or specific exam tips for the reading appraisal, I'd love to hear what worked for you. Third attempt is in three weeks and I really need this score.

Three weeks is plenty of time if you stay consistent. I'd do at least 30 minutes every day rather than cramming. You've already got the score trend going up, that's a good sign.

The life-skills context stuff tripped me up too — things like reading a bus schedule or a utility bill. Once I started practicing with those kinds of real-world documents instead of just textbook passages, my score jumped from a 216 to a 223 in about six weeks. Timed practice makes a huge difference, don't skip that part.

Honestly the best exam tip I got was to always eliminate the obviously wrong answers first even when you're pretty sure you know the right one. Also, for the math portion, the CASAS uses a lot of measurement and estimation problems so brushing up on units and rounding helped me more than I expected. Good luck on your third try — you're so close!
