Passed CAPM on first attempt after failing twice — here's what finally worked

Okay so I have to share this because I was genuinely ready to give up. Failed the CAPM twice in eight months — first time I scored in the "below target" range on almost every domain, second time I got closer but still couldn't push through. I'd been using a single textbook and basically just re-reading the PMBOK over and over like that was going to magically click.

What changed for me was actually doing timed practice questions consistently instead of passive reading. I started using a CAPM Practice Test and honestly the first time I took one I scored a 58% and wanted to cry. But after three weeks of doing 40-50 questions a day and actually reviewing every wrong answer, I could see my weak spots — predictive vs. hybrid approaches, earned value calculations, and stakeholder engagement stuff was killing me.

My third attempt I finished with time to spare and passed. Total study time across all three attempts was probably 200+ hours but the last six weeks were the most targeted. Happy to answer questions if anyone's grinding through this right now.

This is so encouraging to read. I'm about 5 weeks out from my exam and EVM formulas are absolutely destroying me — CPI, SPI, all of it. Did you use any specific approach to memorize those or just repetition through practice questions? I've been making flashcards but they're not sticking when the questions rephrase things slightly.

I passed on my second attempt last year and can confirm the practice test approach is the way to go. The PMBOK is important for context but the exam doesn't test whether you memorized it — it tests whether you can apply the logic in weird situational questions. Also spent time with the CAPM Standards & Best Practices section specifically because my first attempt I underestimated how much they weight agile and hybrid content now.

Congrats!! Three attempts takes serious grit. What score did you aim for on practice tests before you felt ready? I keep hearing "80% consistently" but not sure if that's realistic or just anxiety talking.
