I'm an environmental consultant and my firm wants me to get the CAP certification. I've been doing GHG inventories for 3 years and have solid working knowledge of ISO 14064-1 and 14064-3. What I'm less sure about is how deeply the CAP exam tests audit methodology versus inventory knowledge - those are pretty different skill sets.
I've been studying for 4 weeks at about 90 minutes per day. The audit procedure sections are where I feel shaky, specifically verification statement drafting and material misstatement thresholds. My day-to-day is mostly inventory reporting rather than third-party verification work, so that gap is real.
I'm scoring around 71% on practice questions right now, which makes me nervous given my 6-week target. The exam seems to hit scope 1/2/3 emissions heavily along with the verification planning process. I want to make sure I'm not overconfident about the inventory side while underprepared on the audit side.
Anyone who's gone through it recently - how many questions total and what's the passing score? I've seen conflicting numbers and want to make sure I'm calibrating correctly before I sit for it.
Scope 3 categories showed up a lot more than I expected - specifically the indirect emissions calculation methods for purchased goods and services. I scored 78% first attempt and that was the section I almost got tripped up on.
ISO 14064 knowledge is necessary but not sufficient. The audit evidence and sampling methodology questions require separate study. I spent about 12 hours just on those topics and it showed up significantly on the exam.
I've been in sustainability consulting for 6 years and still needed a solid month of focused prep. Don't underestimate how specific the audit side of this exam is compared to what inventory work requires day-to-day.
The verification statement drafting questions are very specific to ISAE 3410. Make sure you know that standard cold - it's distinct enough from ISO 14064-3 that it needs dedicated review time.
