Canadian citizenship test - how hard is the knowledge section really?

I've been a permanent resident for 3 years and finally have my application in. My test date is about 5 weeks out and I'm trying to figure out how seriously to take the prep. I've heard from some people that it's straightforward if you read the Discover Canada guide, but others say the questions can be tricky depending on your testing location.

My main concern is the history and government sections. I grew up in the Philippines and while I've lived here long enough to know daily life, formal Canadian political history isn't something I've spent much time on. Rights and responsibilities feel more intuitive, but I keep mixing up the roles of different levels of government.

I've been using some online practice tests to gauge where I'm at. My scores sit around 72–76%, which I think is passing territory but not comfortably so. A friend told me that practicing for Canadian citizenship with timed simulations helped her a lot because the actual test moves fast. Has anyone found that approach useful?

Also wondering — do they ever ask about very recent events or is it strictly the historical and government content from the official study material? I don't want to waste time reading news if it's all book-based.

72–76% on practice tests should be fine if you're consistent. I was scoring around 75% and passed easily. The actual test felt about the same difficulty as the free practice questions on the IRCC site. Just make sure you know the rights and responsibilities section cold — it's usually 4–5 questions.

It's 100% from Discover Canada — no current events. I went through the guide twice and scored 18/20 on my test. The tricky parts are usually specific dates like Confederation and women's suffrage, plus the breakdown of federal versus provincial powers. Those trip up a lot of people.

Memorize the three levels of government and what each one controls. That concept shows up in multiple questions worded different ways. Also know the difference between a Member of Parliament and a Member of Provincial Parliament — that tripped me up on a practice test.

I took it last year and finished with about 8 minutes to spare. It's 20 questions in 30 minutes so the pace is manageable. Read each question twice — some are worded to catch you if you skim. Good luck, you're clearly taking it seriously enough.
