CAHSEE math section — what level of algebra does it actually test?

My daughter is a 10th grader and she's been stressing about the CAHSEE math section. She's currently in Algebra 1 and I'm trying to figure out whether that's enough to cover what's on the test or if she'll need Algebra 2 content too. From what I can find the math portion covers through Algebra 1 and basic geometry, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

The CAHSEE math section has 92 questions and the passing standard requires roughly 55% correct, which works out to about a 350 scaled score. Most of the practice material I've seen is Algebra 1 level — linear equations, inequalities, basic graphing, some statistics. The geometry piece looks like basic measurement and properties rather than proof-based geometry.

She's been scoring around 65–70% on the practice tests she's done so I think she's in decent shape, but test anxiety is real and I want her going in confident. Anyone have tips for managing nerves specifically on this exam?

Test anxiety is a legitimate factor. What helped my son was doing timed sections of 20–25 questions at a time rather than sitting for the full 92-question block in practice. Building the habit of moving on from a hard question and circling back later made a big difference on actual test day.

Algebra 1 is all you need — the CAHSEE math doesn't go beyond that. The geometry is entirely basic stuff: area, perimeter, angles, coordinate graphing. If she's consistently scoring 65%+ on practice tests she's very likely to pass the real thing.

The statistics questions catch a lot of kids off guard because they're not always covered heavily in Algebra 1. Reading box plots, interpreting scatter plots, and distinguishing mean from median are worth a targeted review. Those show up more than most students expect.

I went through the CAHSEE math section a couple years back and honestly Algebra 1 covers basically all of it. There's no Algebra 2 on there, so your daughter's fine on that front. The one thing I'd say though is don't just have her memorize the right answers from practice tests. That tripped me up early. The math questions are multiple choice and they build the wrong options out of common mistakes, like if you forget to distribute a negative or flip a sign, that exact wrong answer is sitting right there waiting for you. So when she gets one wrong, have her figure out why that wrong choice was tempting. Once you see how they trap you, you stop falling for it.

It's the same deal on the English part too. I used these free cahsee english language question and answers and the most useful thing wasn't getting them right, it was reading why the other three were wrong. Slower at first, but it actually sticks. She's got this.
