Failed the CA notary exam twice — what finally helped me pass

I honestly didn't think this test would be as hard as it is. I'm a paralegal with five years of experience and figured I could just skim the handbook and show up. Wrong. Failed the first time with a 68 (need 70 to pass), retook it six weeks later and got a 69. I was mortified.

What finally turned things around for me was actually sitting down with a solid CA NOTARY practice test — not just reading the handbook cover to cover again. Doing timed practice questions helped me figure out where I was losing points: mostly on the journal entry requirements and the acknowledgment vs. jurat distinction. Those two topics alone probably account for a third of the questions.

Third attempt I scored an 82. If you're studying right now, I'd focus heavily on disqualifying interests, the 30-day bond filing window, and situations where you're legally required to refuse. Happy to answer questions if anyone's prepping for an upcoming appointment.

This is so relatable. I passed on my second try and the journal requirements were absolutely my weak spot too. The handbook wording is weirdly vague about sequential entry numbering. What helped me was finding a CA NOTARY study guide that actually broke down the Secretary of State rules in plain English instead of just restating the statute. Once I understood the *why* behind each rule it clicked way faster than just memorizing.

Quick question — did you use any specific exam tips for the acknowledgment wording questions? I keep mixing up when you can complete a certificate that's already attached vs. when you have to use a loose certificate. My test is in three weeks and that whole section feels like a blur. Also did you study the immigration notario rules? I've seen conflicting info on whether those show up much.

The 30-day bond filing window tripped me up too on my first attempt. Such a specific number that's easy to blank on under pressure. Writing it down ten times the night before sounds dumb but honestly it worked for me.
