Finally passed my BRPT on the second attempt — here's what actually helped

I'm a sleep tech with about three years of experience and I failed my first BRPT attempt back in January by just four points. Devastating. I'd been using random YouTube videos and some old notes from a coworker, which clearly wasn't enough. After that I got serious and completely rebuilt my study approach over about eight weeks.

The biggest game-changer was finding a solid BRPT practice test that actually matched the exam's style — the real test loves scenario-based questions where two answers both seem right, and you have to think about what a credentialed tech would do in that specific situation. I also grabbed a proper BRPT study guide that covered AASM scoring rules in depth, because that's where I kept losing points. Arousals, leg movements, respiratory events — the nuances matter more than I expected.

My exam tips for anyone starting out: don't just memorize definitions, practice applying them. Timed practice under test conditions was honestly what pushed me from borderline to comfortable. Happy to answer questions about specific topics if anyone's prepping right now.

I passed on my first try last fall and the scenario questions are no joke — they'll describe a patient doing something unexpected mid-study and you have to know the protocol. What helped me was writing out my own cheat sheets instead of just reading. Forcing yourself to explain it back in your own words reveals the gaps fast. Also the RPSGT content overlaps a lot if anyone's dual-prepping.

Congrats! This is really encouraging. I'm about six weeks out from my exam date and the scoring rules are killing me too — especially the difference between hypopneas with and without arousals. I've been doing about 90 minutes of studying on weekdays. Did you find the actual exam heavier on PSG scoring or more on equipment troubleshooting? Trying to figure out where to spend my last few weeks.

Four points — ugh, I know that feeling from another certification attempt years ago. Good on you for coming back and actually changing your approach instead of just studying harder at the same stuff. That's the move most people don't make.
