BMV permit test — how different is Indiana from other states?

I moved from Ohio 6 months ago and I need to take the Indiana BMV permit test to get my Indiana license. I had an Ohio license for 8 years but I let it expire during a job transition and now I have to start over.

I've been driving for years so the actual driving isn't the issue — it's the state-specific rules I'm worried about. Indiana has some laws that differ from Ohio, like right-of-way rules at T-intersections and some specific passing laws.

Is there a good way to focus on Indiana-specific content rather than general driving knowledge I already have?

Sign recognition questions are universal but Indiana adds some state-specific signs you might not have seen in Ohio. The manual has all of them — don't skip the signs chapter assuming you know them all.

The permit test practice questions are very close to what you'll actually see. Do a few timed practice sessions before your appointment — the format and phrasing of Indiana BMV questions has its own style.

The Indiana Driver's Manual is the source of truth — read it even if you feel like you know how to drive. The permit test pulls directly from it, including Indiana-specific rules you won't know from Ohio experience. It's about 80 pages and worth reading cover to cover.

Indiana-specific things to focus on: move over law for emergency vehicles (it's strict here), passing rules on two-lane roads, and blood alcohol limits. These come up repeatedly and the rules differ subtly from Ohio.

Honestly I almost just drove on my expired Ohio license and hoped for the best lol. The Indiana-specific stuff isn't as bad as I thought it would be -- it's mostly speed limits in school zones, some road sign stuff that's slightly different, and a few rules around passing on two-lane roads that Ohio doesn't really emphasize. I'd been driving for 12 years so sitting down to study a permit manual felt ridiculous, but some of it actually caught me off guard.

What got me through it was just doing practice questions until I stopped second-guessing myself. I failed a practice test the first time I tried and nearly gave up because I figured if I couldn't pass a fake test I was cooked. Kept at it though and passed the real one on my first try. Don't overthink it -- you probably know more than you think, you just need to shake off the Ohio habits for a few of the edge cases.
