Finally passed my BGE exam after two attempts — here's what worked

So I just got my BGE certification results back and I passed with an 82. Honestly didn't think I'd make it after failing my first attempt back in March by four points. That first time around I basically just skimmed the manual and thought that'd be enough — it wasn't. The gas systems and pressure regulation sections destroyed me.

What changed the second time was actually being systematic about it. I spent about 6 weeks studying, roughly 45 minutes a night after work. I grabbed a BGE study guide online and went through it section by section instead of jumping around. The biggest thing that helped me was doing a BGE practice test every Sunday to track where I was still weak. By week four I could see my practice scores climbing from the low 60s up into the high 70s, which gave me a lot more confidence going in.

For anyone prepping right now — don't underestimate the safety codes and compliance portions. I probably had 20% of my questions come from that area and my first attempt I had barely touched it. Anyone else have tips on the installation troubleshooting questions? Those still tripped me up a bit even when I passed.

I'm currently in week three of studying for mine, scheduled for late June. How long was the actual exam and how many questions? I've seen different numbers floating around online. Also did you find the exam tips on the official prep materials accurate in terms of topic weighting? I feel like I'm spending too much time on combustion theory and not enough on the code compliance stuff based on what you're saying.

Congrats on passing! The safety codes section got me too on my first try. What helped me was making flashcards specifically for the NFPA 54 requirements — there's a lot of memorization involved and just reading it doesn't stick. Also, second-guessing yourself on the multiple choice is a killer. Go with your first instinct unless you have a real concrete reason to change it. Took me two attempts as well so I know the frustration.

Four points short on the first try is brutal, but an 82 on the second is a solid score — well done. The Sunday practice test routine is smart, that kind of consistent self-testing is what actually builds retention rather than just re-reading notes. Keep that method in mind for any future certs.
