Finally passed my BCIA exam after failing twice — here's what worked

So I just got my results back and I'm officially BCIA certified. Honestly didn't think I'd get here after bombing it twice. My first attempt I scored a 68 when you need a 75, second time a 72. I was this close to giving up and just sticking with my current caseload without the cert.

What finally clicked for me was actually slowing down on the psychophysiology sections — I'd been breezing past the autonomic nervous system stuff thinking I knew it cold, but those questions are way more nuanced than I expected. I also spent the last three weeks drilling with a BCIA practice test every other day instead of just rereading Schwartz & Andrasik. Repetition under timed conditions made a huge difference for my pacing.

If anyone's in the same boat, I'd love to hear what study guide or resources helped you. The official reading list is massive and I'm not sure I used my time efficiently the first two rounds. Any exam tips from people who passed on the first try especially welcome — I want to help my colleague who's testing in August.

This thread is timely for me — I'm testing in September and feeling pretty overwhelmed by the breadth of content. Did you find the BCIA practice test questions similar in difficulty to the real exam? I've seen some prep materials online that feel way too easy and I don't want a false sense of security going in. Also curious whether the biofeedback modality questions lean more theoretical or applied.

Congrats! I passed on my first try last year but I definitely got lucky on the neurofeedback protocol questions. My biggest tip: don't neglect the ethics and standards section. I almost skipped it thinking it'd be common sense stuff, but there were like 6-7 questions that were way more specific than I expected. I used the Association for Applied Psychophysiology study guide and did about 90 hours of prep over 10 weeks.

The timed practice thing is huge. I did untimed practice forever and then completely choked on pacing during the real exam. Switched to strict 90-second-per-question limits and my score jumped noticeably on mocks. Good luck to everyone testing this cycle.
