Finally passed my BCI exam after two attempts — here's what worked

So I just got my results back yesterday and I finally passed the BCI certification exam on my second try. Honestly I was pretty discouraged after the first attempt because I felt like I'd studied reasonably hard and still came up 8 points short of passing. The problem was I was reading through the study guide cover to cover without actually testing myself, which turns out to be a terrible strategy for this particular exam.

What changed everything for me was switching to active recall. I started doing a BCI practice test every single evening for the last three weeks before my retake — timing myself, reviewing every wrong answer, and keeping a running list of concepts I kept missing. Supply chain continuity planning and crisis communications were my weak spots and I didn't even know it until I started drilling with practice questions.

The exam tips I picked up from this community also helped a ton, especially the advice about reading scenarios all the way through before jumping to answers. If anyone is coming up on their first attempt I'm happy to share my study schedule — just ask below.

This is encouraging to read. I'm scheduled for my first attempt in about six weeks and honestly the study guide feels overwhelming. How many hours total did you end up putting in for the retake? I'm currently doing maybe 90 minutes a night but I'm not sure if that's enough. Also did you find any particular chapters more heavily weighted on the actual exam?

Congrats! I took mine last spring and totally agree about active recall. The BCI practice test questions really do mirror the actual exam format way more closely than just re-reading material. I also blocked out the last week before my exam for nothing but scenario-based questions. Ended up passing with a comfortable margin. The crisis comms section tripped me up too — there are a lot of nuanced distinctions they like to test on.

Solid advice on reading scenarios fully before answering — I rushed through a few questions on mine and second-guessed myself into wrong answers I actually knew. Slow down, trust your prep. You've got this.
