BCABA exam — how different is the content from what's on the BCBA?

I'm currently working under a BCBA supervisor in a school-based ABA program and decided to get my BCABA before continuing toward the full BCBA. Figured it would give me a recognized credential while I accumulate more supervised hours. Passed about six weeks ago with a 68% — the pass threshold is 65% so it was closer than I wanted, but I passed.

The BCABA task list overlaps significantly with the BCBA content but the scope is narrower. The BCABA isn't expected to design behavior programs independently — the exam tests whether you can implement and monitor programs under supervision. The ethics and professional conduct section reflects that scope and came up in probably 18–20% of my questions, mostly as scenario-based items about what a BCABA can and can't do without BCBA oversight.

I studied for 10 weeks at 2 hours per day. Cooper, Heron, and Heward is still the foundational text and worth reading even though it's dense — especially the measurement and data collection chapters. I also used Mometrix flashcards for terminology. The measurement section is actually more straightforward than the ethics section for most people.

One thing that surprised me: there's more content on verbal behavior and motivating operations than I expected for an assistant-level credential. Don't skip those chapters assuming they're BCBA-only material. Allocate at least two full weeks to behavior principles and verbal behavior combined.

The difference in scope between BCABA and BCBA is something the exam hammers repeatedly. If a question describes a situation requiring independent clinical judgment, the BCABA answer is almost always to consult with or defer to the supervising BCBA. Once I internalized that frame it made the harder questions easier.

Cooper's textbook is a commitment but it's worth it. I read it cover to cover the first six weeks then used the last four weeks for practice questions. The Mometrix flashcards are a good supplement but don't rely on them as your primary source — some definitions are slightly off compared to what the BACB uses.

Measurement and data collection is the most straightforward section if you're already collecting data in the field. Frequency, rate, duration, latency, IOA calculations — if you're doing that work daily the questions feel intuitive. Don't overthink it.

The ethics section had a lot of scenario-based questions about dual relationships, maintaining professional boundaries, and what to do when your supervisor asks you to do something outside your scope. Those were harder than the pure ABA content because the right answer isn't always obvious from the ethics code alone.
