How long did it take you to prep for the BAT certification? Starting from scratch here

I've been offered a position that requires me to hold a Breath Alcohol Technician certification and I have about 5 weeks to get it. My background is in occupational health but I've never done any BAT-specific training before. Trying to get a realistic picture of the time commitment.

From what I've read the BAT certification covers device calibration, proper collection procedures, DOT chain of custody requirements, and result documentation. The device-specific training seems like the piece that varies most by employer — some use the Lifeloc FC10, others use different approved devices.

I'm planning to do the DOT-compliant training course which is typically 8 hours of classroom or online content plus the hands-on component. The written exam portion sounds straightforward — I've seen people mention it's around 25 questions and the pass threshold is 80%. Is that accurate for the current version?

The part I'm more nervous about is the proficiency demonstration — doing the actual collection steps correctly in the right sequence. Any advice on how to practice that before the hands-on evaluation? I've been watching procedural videos but nothing beats reps.

I did the online course over 2 days and then had a 1-day hands-on session. Total prep was probably 15-18 hours including self-study. The DOT procedures chapter is the one to know cold — the chain of custody steps are tested in detail.

Your 5-week timeline is comfortable. Most people get certified in 2-3 weeks if they're focused. Make sure your training provider is DOT-approved though — a few sketchy ones issue certificates that aren't recognized.

The written portion is definitely manageable at 80%. The harder part for most people is the proficiency demo — the evaluator will intentionally create distractions or have the 'donor' do something non-compliant to see if you catch it.

Device-specific training matters more than people expect. The Lifeloc and Intoxilyzer have different step sequences and if you train on one and get evaluated on another you can trip up on the order even if you know the general procedure.
