Finally passed BART exam after two attempts — here's what actually helped

So I finally got my BART certification last week after failing the first time back in February. Honestly I was pretty devastated after that first attempt because I thought I'd studied enough, but I completely underestimated how tricky the operational scenario questions were. Scored a 71 when I needed a 75.

What turned things around for me was actually slowing down and doing timed practice sections instead of just reading through my notes. I found a solid BART practice test online that had questions formatted really similarly to the real thing — that made a huge difference for getting comfortable with how they phrase stuff. Combined with a decent study guide that broke down the rules-of-the-road and train handling sections, I got from a 71 to an 82 in about six weeks of studying maybe 45 minutes a day.

Anyone else out there prepping right now? Happy to share what specific topics to focus on — there are definitely a few areas that show up way more than you'd expect. The traction power and emergency procedures sections especially caught me off guard the first time.

Two attempts is really common for this one, don't feel bad about it. I passed on my first try but only because a coworker who'd already been through it warned me that the scenario questions are almost never about the obvious answer — they're testing your judgment under pressure, not just whether you memorized the rulebook. That mindset shift helped me a lot during the test.

Congrats on passing! I'm sitting mine in about three weeks and the emergency procedures stuff is exactly what's stressing me out. Did you find the actual exam questions were pretty close to what you'd seen in practice, or did they throw in a lot of curveballs? I've been drilling the exam tips I found on a couple forums but some of the advice seems contradictory.

45 minutes a day for six weeks is actually solid discipline. A lot of people cram the week before and it shows. Timed practice sections are clutch — you don't realize how slow you're reading under pressure until you've actually timed yourself a few times.
