Finally passed my AZDOT exam after two failed attempts — here's what worked

I'm not going to sugarcoat it — I failed this thing twice before I finally got my score up. The first time I walked in thinking my years of field experience would carry me through. Walked out with a 68. Second attempt I just read the manual cover to cover and got a 71. Still not enough. Third time I actually changed my approach completely.

What finally clicked was finding a solid AZDOT practice test that matched the real question format. The actual exam throws a lot of situational stuff at you — it's not just memorizing definitions. I spent about three weeks doing 30-40 practice questions a day, then timing myself on full mock exams the last week. My weak spots were the traffic control and pavement marking sections, so I drilled those specifically using a study guide that broke them down by topic.

Scored an 84 on my third attempt. Honestly if I'd started with practice tests instead of just reading, I probably would've passed the first time. Anyone else here prepping for AZDOT right now? Happy to share what resources I used.

This is exactly what I needed to see. I have my exam scheduled for three weeks from now and I've been mostly just reading through the official manual, which sounds like it's not enough on its own. Going to start incorporating daily practice questions tonight. Did you find the timing pressure on the real exam was similar to the mock tests you were taking? That's the part that stresses me out most.

The traffic control section got me too on my first attempt. There's way more nuance in those questions than you'd expect — they love testing edge cases where two rules seem to conflict. My exam tip that nobody talks about: read every answer choice before picking one. Sounds obvious but I was rushing and second-guessing myself constantly. Slowing down on the situational questions made a huge difference for me.

Congrats on passing! Three attempts is honestly more common than people admit — most folks I know don't post about their failures. The study guide + practice test combo is the right call. Pavement markings especially trip people up because there are so many small distinctions. You've got this if you stay consistent with the daily practice.
