Failed AZ-301 twice — what finally clicked for my third attempt

Okay so I've been lurking here for months and finally feel like I have something worth sharing. I passed AZ-301 last week on my third try and honestly didn't think it was going to happen. My first two attempts I scored 672 and 681 — so close both times it was maddening. The exam destroyed me on integration scenarios and hybrid identity stuff. I kept reading the same Microsoft docs over and over and nothing was sticking.

What changed was switching up how I practiced. Instead of just reading, I started doing timed practice tests and actually reviewing every wrong answer in detail. I used AZ-301 Test 1 to baseline myself, then worked through my weak spots systematically. The architecture design and integration questions were killing my score, so I spent two solid weeks just on those domains — probably 3 hours a night after work.

Third attempt I hit 782. If anyone else is stuck in that 670-690 range, I promise it's not a knowledge problem, it's a scenario interpretation problem. Happy to share what specifically helped with the design for identity and security questions since that's where most people seem to struggle.

This is exactly what happened to me too. Passed on attempt three last spring. The thing nobody tells you is that AZ-301 is testing your ability to pick the BEST answer among multiple technically correct ones — and that's a different skill than just knowing Azure. I'd also recommend the AZ-301 Test 2 once you feel confident, it has some really tricky cost optimization scenarios that showed up almost verbatim on my actual exam.

Do you mind sharing how you broke down the study guide topics? I'm currently at about 55 hours of prep and scheduled for next month. My weak area is definitely the migration and hybrid scenarios — I can do pure-cloud designs fine but the on-prem integration stuff always trips me up. Also, roughly how long did you spend on each domain? I've been treating them equally which I'm now thinking was a mistake.

Congrats on passing! That 672 → 782 jump is huge. For anyone hitting a wall on integration design specifically, the AZ-301 Architecture Design & Integration 3 practice set was a game-changer for me. The explanations on the answer breakdowns are really thorough.
