Just passed my AMT — here's what actually worked

Finally got my AMT certification after 15 weeks of prep. Wanted to share what made the difference for anyone still grinding.

I spent the first few weeks just reading the official material, but my scores weren't moving. The real turning point was switching to active practice. Every time I got a question wrong, I went back to find out exactly why — not just the right answer but the concept behind it. If you haven't tried it yet, the free amt airframe systems & structures questions and answers covers the material in a way that actually matches the real exam format.

For the study guide section specifically, I recommend drilling it separately before mixing it into full-length tests. The AMT exam rewards consistency over cramming. Three weeks before test day I was scoring 72% on practice sets — and I passed with 93% on the real thing.

Happy to answer questions. Don't give up — it's absolutely doable.

For the people asking about study timelines: I studied 77 minutes per day for 10 weeks working full time. It's absolutely doable without burning out. The key is consistency — missing days hurts more than extending your timeline.

Really helpful breakdown, thanks for sharing. I'm at week 3 of my AMT prep and the practice test section is exactly where I'm struggling too. Going to try the approach you described and see if it moves my scores.

Bookmarking this. I'm still in the early stages of AMT prep and threads like this are way more useful than generic study guides. The specifics about study guide are particularly helpful — that's the section I've been avoiding.

Congrats on passing! Can I ask — how many questions did the actual exam have compared to what the practice tests simulate? I've seen different numbers online and want to calibrate my timing during practice.

Good thread. One thing I'd add: don't try to cram the night before. I did 2 hours the night before my AMT and I think it hurt more than helped. Your brain needs consolidation time. Light review or full rest is better.

Congrats to everyone still in it. The thing that honestly moved the needle for me was drilling specific systems instead of reviewing everything broadly. I wasted weeks trying to "cover it all" and my scores barely budged. Once I focused hard on weak spots, like going deep on amt/questions/aircraft fuel systems, I started actually retaining it and my practice scores jumped fast.

The other thing I'd say is don't underestimate how much the question format matters. Reading the material feels productive but it isn't the same as being tested on it. If you're not doing timed practice regularly you're not really prepping, you're just studying. Keep pushing, it clicks eventually.

Working full-time made this brutal. I'd squeeze in 20-30 minutes during lunch, maybe another session after the kids were in bed, and honestly some nights I was too fried to retain anything. What helped was staying focused on weak spots instead of reviewing stuff I already knew — I kept hitting amt/questions/aircraft fuel systems because that section kept tripping me up, and drilling it specifically moved my scores faster than any broad review session.

The biggest thing I'd tell anyone juggling a job and this exam is don't skip the days when you only have 15 minutes. Consistency beats marathon cramming every time. It's not glamorous but it works.
