GPC written exam — how hard is the glider operations section really
Taking my GPC written in three weeks. I've been a powered aircraft student for about a year (haven't soloed yet, long story) and my CFI suggested I pursue glider first because the airspace and regulations knowledge transfers directly and the training is cheaper per hour in our area.
I'm comfortable with airspace, weather, and the FARs. What I'm not sure about is glider-specific operations — ridge lift, thermal soaring, wave conditions, tow procedures. This is all new to me and I'm trying to figure out how deep the written exam actually goes on these topics versus the more general aviation knowledge that I already have from my powered training.
I've been working through GPC practice tests and the glider-specific questions feel more conceptual than what I expected. Is that representative of the actual exam difficulty, or does it get more technical?
The written is genuinely not that hard if you've already done powered ground school. The glider-specific material — tow procedures, soaring techniques, site evaluation — is tested at a conceptual level. They're not going to ask you to calculate L/D ratio or thermal climb rates numerically.
Ridge lift and wave conditions had a couple questions on my exam. Nothing you can't handle with a solid read through the Glider Flying Handbook. The FAA publication is free and covers exactly what they test.
Your powered training background is genuinely an advantage. Weather and airspace questions on the glider written are identical to what you'd see on the PPL-A written. You're probably more prepared than you think.
Three weeks is plenty. I did mine in about two weeks of part-time study — maybe an hour a night after work. The tow procedures section was the only part that felt new to me coming from powered background.
