ASE Heating & A/C vs Steering Alignment — which exam is tougher?
I'm trying to decide whether to schedule the A7 Heating and Air Conditioning exam or the A4 Steering and Suspension exam next. I've done A5 Brakes already and I'm building toward Master Technician status. Both seem manageable on paper but I've heard conflicting things from other techs.
Some say A7 is tricky because refrigerant handling regulations and HVAC electrical diagnostics are very detail-oriented. Others say A4's wheel alignment math and frame geometry concepts catch people off guard even if they can do the physical work with their eyes closed. I've been practicing with the ASE Heating and Air Conditioning practice test and the ASE Steering and Wheel Alignment practice test to get a baseline feel for both, and my mock scores are similar.
Anyone who has sat for both — which gave you more trouble and why? I'm specifically finding the refrigerant questions on A7 more unpredictable than the alignment questions on A4.
A7 is harder in my experience, mainly because of Section 609 refrigerant regulations and the electrical side of automatic climate control systems. A4 has alignment math but it's consistent once you learn the formulas. The regulatory content in A7 changes and some questions are very specific about refrigerant recovery procedures. Budget an extra week for A7 compared to A4.
I passed both in the same testing window. A4 took less prep time because I do suspension work daily. A7 was tougher because HVAC electrical questions aren't covered deeply in most study guides. If your shop does regular A/C work, A7 will feel natural. If not, focus on pressure-temperature relationship questions — they show up constantly.
