I've already passed A4 and A5 and I'm planning to tackle A8 Electrical Systems next. Everyone in my shop says A8 is where people get humbled — a lot of guys who breezed through the mechanical exams fail A8 on the first attempt. I want to avoid that.
The exam covers schematic reading, multiplexing systems, CAN bus diagnostics, and oscilloscope interpretation. That last one makes me nervous because I barely touched an oscilloscope during training. The ASE certified mechanic test prep resources help with electrical theory, but I'm not sure if that's enough for A8 specifically.
For those who've passed A8 — which sections tripped you up most? Is there any topic I should spend extra time on? I have six weeks before my scheduled date. Also curious whether hands-on lab practice matters as much as book study for this wiring-diagram-heavy exam.
CAN bus and multiplexing will trip you up if you haven't dealt with modern vehicle networks at the shop. Spend at least a third of your study time on serial data communication concepts. Grab a wiring diagram for any late-model vehicle and practice tracing circuits cold — no help, just the diagram. That single drill improved my score more than anything else I tried.
