Finally passed my ASC exam after two attempts — what actually helped

So I've been lurking here for a while and wanted to share my experience since I couldn't find much specific advice when I was preparing. I work at an independent collision shop in Ohio and my boss basically gave me a deadline to get certified or lose my lead tech position. No pressure, right? First attempt I scored a 68 — passing is 75 — so I had to go back and really figure out what I was missing.

Between attempts I spent about 6 weeks using an ASC practice test site daily, usually 20-30 questions before my shift. The big gap for me was estimating procedures and total loss thresholds. I thought I knew that stuff cold but apparently not. I also grabbed a study guide that broke down the damage analysis section, which is where I was losing the most points.

Second attempt I hit an 81. Honestly the biggest exam tip I can offer is don't just memorize answers — understand the reasoning behind each repair decision. The questions are situational, not straightforward recall. Anyone else prepping right now? Happy to answer questions.

Congrats on passing! I'm about 3 weeks out from my exam and your post is exactly what I needed to read. I've been doing maybe 15 practice questions a day but maybe I need to bump that up. The estimating section is where I'm weakest too — been in the industry 8 years but somehow the written stuff trips me up more than I'd expect. Did you find the actual test matched what you were practicing, or were there surprises?

The situational question format is no joke. I took mine last spring and there were a handful of questions where I knew the right answer instinctively from the shop floor but had to really think through how to apply the written standard. My advice: don't skip the ethics and customer communication sections. I almost did and those showed up way more than I expected. Took me 3 attempts total so don't get discouraged if you don't pass first time.

81 on your second try is solid, well done. I passed on my first attempt with a 78 — barely, honestly — and the study guide was the thing that saved me. The practice tests help you get used to the format but reading through the reasoning explanations is where the real learning happens.
