ARK Assessment of Religious Knowledge — has anyone actually taken this?

I've been trying to find solid information about the ARK exam and it's surprisingly hard to track down real test-taker experiences. Everything I find is either from the official body or vague forum posts from years ago. What's the format like — multiple choice, essay, or mixed?

From what I can piece together, the content covers comparative religion, theology, scripture interpretation, and religious history. I'm coming from a seminary background so I feel okay on the theological side, but I'm less confident about world religions outside Christianity. Spent the last 3 weeks specifically reviewing Buddhism and Islam.

My main question is about scoring. I've seen references to a scaled score but no clear passing threshold anywhere. If you've taken this test, did your prep institution give you any guidance on what score to target? I don't want to walk in blind on that front.

Also curious about timing — roughly how many weeks out did people start preparing? I'm 6 weeks away right now and doing about 2 hours a day, mostly reading primary texts and reviewing my old seminary notes. Not sure if that's the right approach or if I should be doing more structured question practice.

I took it last year through my diocese program. The format was mostly multiple choice with a few short-answer sections. The world religions portion was harder than I expected — they go into specifics on Hindu scripture and Buddhist traditions that caught me off guard.

Seminary background definitely helps but don't assume it covers everything. The historical context questions require you to know dates and councils pretty precisely. I'd spend at least a week specifically on church history timelines.

Passing threshold varies by the administering institution from what I understand. My program required 70% but I've heard of others requiring 75%. Confirm with whoever is administering yours before you go in.

Honestly I almost bailed on this whole thing around week three because I couldn't find decent practice material anywhere. The format is mostly multiple choice with some short constructed responses mixed in, which I wasn't expecting. What actually helped me turn a corner was grinding through free ark interfaith dialogue questions because that section trips people up way more than the doctrinal stuff does.

If you're at the point where you're questioning whether the exam is even real, I get it. It's not well documented and the official prep materials are kind of thin. But it's legit and you can pass it without expensive courses. Just be honest about where your gaps are and focus there, I wasted two weeks reviewing content I already knew cold.

Failed it the first time, which honestly I wasn't expecting. I went in thinking my general knowledge was enough and it really wasn't. The content is more specific than it sounds — you can't just have a broad understanding of religious texts, you need to know details, dates, specific terminology, and how different traditions compare on particular points. I barely touched the comparative sections when I studied and that's where I lost most of my marks.

Second time I spent way more time on the areas I'd glossed over and it made a real difference. I also started doing timed practice early instead of just reading notes, because the pacing caught me off guard the first time. If you've got a decent foundation already, don't make my mistake of assuming that's enough — go deeper on the stuff that feels familiar, because those are exactly the questions that trip you up.
