Finally passed ARA exam after two attempts — here's what actually worked

So I just got my results back yesterday and I PASSED. Honestly didn't think I'd make it after failing in March by 4 points. I'm a retail buyer with about 6 years of experience, and I went in the first time thinking my day-to-day knowledge would carry me. Spoiler: it did not. The exam covers a lot of theory and terminology that you don't necessarily think about consciously even when you're doing it every day.

The biggest difference this time around was actually being systematic about it. I used an ARA practice test to figure out where my gaps were — turns out merchandise planning and financial analysis questions were killing me. Spent about 6 weeks this time, roughly 45 minutes a day, versus my first attempt where I crammed for two weeks and called it good.

Happy to share what resources I used and which topics to focus on if anyone's preparing. Also curious if others found the actual exam harder or easier than the practice materials?

Congrats! I passed last fall and honestly the financial analysis section caught me off guard too. I'd been in buying roles for four years and still had to really dig into open-to-buy calculations and gross margin math. The ARA study guide I used had decent coverage of that but I supplemented with some YouTube videos on retail math. Give yourself more time than you think you need — two weeks is never enough.

This is exactly what I needed to see right now. I take mine in seven weeks and I'm terrified. Can I ask — how close were the practice questions to what actually showed up on the exam? I've been doing maybe 20-30 practice questions a day but I can't tell if I'm actually ready or just memorizing the same question pool over and over. Also did you find inventory management or supplier negotiation to be a bigger focus?

Four points the first time and then a pass — that's such a common story with this cert. The exam tips that helped me most: flag anything you're unsure on and come back, and don't overthink situational questions. Your first instinct is usually right. Good luck to everyone else still grinding through it.
