Finally passed AQS after two attempts — here's what actually worked

So I just got my results back yesterday and I finally passed the AQS exam on my second try. First attempt I scored a 71 and needed a 75 to pass, which was absolutely gutting after six weeks of studying. I want to share what changed the second time around because I was seriously questioning whether I'd ever get this certification.

The biggest shift was switching from just reading the ASTA manual to actually using an AQS practice test to drill the question formats. The exam has this specific way of phrasing scenario questions about sustainable tourism practices and supplier partnerships that you really have to get used to. My study guide from the first attempt was basically just flashcards — not enough. Second time I spent about 3 hours a week for 8 weeks focused on weak areas: destination geography scoring and the environmental commitment criteria.

Anyone else struggling with the geography component? That section nearly tanked me both times. Happy to share my notes if it helps someone.

Wait, you needed a 75 to pass? I thought it was 70. Has the passing score changed recently? I'm sitting for mine in about six weeks and I've been targeting 72-73 as my goal score, which now sounds like it might not be enough. I've been using a study guide but honestly haven't done many timed practice runs yet. Should I be worried?

Congrats! I passed mine about four months ago and the geography piece was rough for me too. What helped was focusing on ASTA's specific list of sustainable destinations rather than trying to memorize everything. Also, for exam tips I'd say don't overthink the ethics questions — they're usually pretty straightforward if you've been in the industry a while. The practice questions online are honestly pretty close to the real tone of the test.

The passing score is still 70 — might depend on which version of the exam you got. Either way, aim for 80+ so you've got buffer. Two attempts builds character, right? Congrats on pushing through.
