Finally passed the APE exam after two attempts — here's what worked

So I just got my results back and I finally passed the APE on my second attempt. Honestly felt like crying a little. First time around I went in pretty overconfident, figured my years of experience in environmental planning would carry me through. Scored a 68, needed a 70. That stings in a very specific way.

What changed the second time was actually committing to structured prep. I spent about six weeks this time, two hours most weeknights, using a solid APE study guide that broke down the land use, community engagement, and sustainability domains separately instead of treating it as one giant blob of material. The practice questions are what really moved the needle — doing timed sets helped me stop second-guessing myself on the tricky situational questions.

If you're starting out, my biggest exam tip is don't skip the ethics and professional responsibility section. I underestimated it both times, but it showed up more than I expected. Happy to answer questions about what study materials I used or how I structured my schedule.

Congrats! I'm about three weeks out from my exam date and this is really reassuring. I've been doing APE practice test sets every other day and tracking which domains I'm weakest in. Land use regulations are killing me — do you remember roughly how heavily that section was weighted? I feel like I'm spending 60% of my time there and maybe neglecting some of the softer skills stuff.

Two attempts is totally normal, don't let anyone make you feel bad about it. The pass rate on this thing isn't as high as people assume going in. Congrats on pushing through and coming back with a better plan — that's the hard part.

The ethics section is no joke, you're right about that. I passed on my first try but I think the reason was I actually read through the AICP Code of Ethics pretty carefully beforehand and did a bunch of scenario-based questions. A lot of people treat it like a formality. Also — six weeks at two hours a night is almost exactly what I did. Seems like the right prep window for most people.
