Failed APC once — what actually worked for my second attempt?

So I took the APC exam back in February and honestly bombed it. Missed by 11 points, which stings because I thought I was ready. I'd been studying on and off for about six weeks using just the official APCO materials and figured that was enough. Spoiler: it wasn't.

For round two I completely changed my approach. I found an APC practice test that actually mimicked the real question format and started drilling those every night for 30 minutes. That alone exposed huge gaps in my knowledge around ICS structures and CAD terminology that I didn't even know I had. I also printed out a study guide and went section by section instead of jumping around.

Passed with a 78 on my second try. My main exam tips for anyone starting out: don't underestimate the radio communications module, and time yourself on practice questions from day one. The real test moves faster than you expect. Anyone else have a rough first attempt and turn it around?

Can I ask how far out you started your second round of studying? I'm scheduled for mine in about 8 weeks and I'm not sure if that's enough time. I work overnight shifts so I can only get maybe 45 minutes of studying in before I crash. Wondering if I should push the date back or just be more focused with the time I have.

Congrats on passing! I went through something similar. My first attempt I skimmed the study guide and thought I knew the material, but the actual exam has a lot of situational questions that trip you up if you've only memorized definitions. Spent about 40 hours total prepping for attempt two, heavy on practice tests, and finished with an 82. The radio discipline section was definitely the surprise for me too.

8 weeks is plenty if you're consistent. I'd prioritize practice questions over re-reading the manual cover to cover. Active recall beats passive reading every time for this kind of exam. Good luck!
