ALP exam - does work experience actually substitute for a paralegal degree when it comes to how firms view the cert?

I've been working as a legal secretary for 7 years at a mid-size litigation firm and I'm considering sitting for the ALP exam. The NALS eligibility requirements mention that work experience can substitute for formal education, and I technically meet the hours threshold. But I'm not sure if passing the ALP carries real weight in the legal field relative to the more well-known paralegal certifications.

My practice test scores are coming in around 69-72% right now - strong on civil procedure and document preparation but weak on real property and probate areas I haven't touched much in litigation work. I'm about 9 weeks out from my planned exam date and doing 90 minutes of studying daily after work.

The specific thing I'm unsure about is whether law firms treat the ALP as a meaningful credential for salary negotiations or whether it's mostly useful for professional networking within NALS. I've seen job postings that mention it but can't tell if it's actually driving hiring decisions or just listed for completeness. Has anyone negotiated a raise specifically because of the ALP?

The ALP carries real professional signal within firms that know NALS, but you're right that it's not universally recognized the way certain paralegal certs are. Its value varies a lot by geography and firm type - larger firms in major markets tend to know it better than smaller regional practices.

The ALP is generally considered an entry-to-mid credential. If you're eventually targeting the PLS exam, the ALP is useful preparation and the study overlap is significant. A lot of people treat it as step one in the NALS pathway rather than a standalone destination.

Your litigation background means the civil procedure and document sections will feel natural. I'd spend the next 9 weeks heavily on real property and basic wills and estates concepts - those sections have enough overlap to make targeted studying pay off fast. Two focused weeks on those got my weakest areas from 58% to 74%.

I got a 6% salary bump after earning my ALP at a corporate legal department - they were specifically looking for NALS credentials for a senior legal secretary role they were filling. It's more recognized in some practice areas and firm sizes than others, so it depends a lot on your local market.
