Finally passed my AK exam after two attempts — here's what worked

Okay so I failed my first attempt back in March and honestly I was pretty devastated. I'd been studying on and off for about three weeks, mostly just reading through the manual and hoping things would stick. Spoiler: they didn't. I scored a 71 and needed a 75 to pass.

For round two I completely changed my approach. I started using an AK practice test every single day for two weeks straight — doing timed sessions and actually reviewing every wrong answer instead of just moving on. That made a huge difference. I also found a study guide that broke down the trickier regulation sections in plain English, which helped a lot since that's where I was losing most of my points.

My biggest exam tips: don't skip the procedural questions, they show up more than you'd think. And give yourself at least 90 seconds per question on the harder sections. Passed with an 82 this time. If you're prepping right now, what's tripping you up the most?

Congrats! The procedural stuff got me too on my first try. I ended up making flashcards for all the step-by-step sequences and that helped it actually stick. I also did practice tests under real conditions — no phone, timer running — because I was rushing too much when it counted. Ended up passing with a 79. The practice really does translate.

How long did you study total for your second attempt? I'm currently about a week out from my test date and feeling shaky on the regulatory compliance section specifically. Did your study guide cover that in depth or was it more general? I've been doing maybe 45 minutes a day but wondering if I should be doing more this close to the exam.

Same boat here last year. Two attempts, passed the second time. Honestly just trusting the process and not cramming the night before made a big difference for me. Sleep matters more than one extra hour of review, I promise.
