I've been going back and forth on whether to pursue CPA certification and wanted to get honest input from people who've actually done it.
On paper, having practice test credentials on your resume looks great. But I'm wondering whether employers actually differentiate between certified and non-certified candidates in practice, or whether it just checks a box.
My current role doesn't require the CPA but a senior position I'm targeting lists it as preferred. I've been using the cpa pesticide types & formulations to study and the content is solid — but I want to make sure the certification itself carries weight before investing another 12 weeks.
For anyone who got the CPA cert: did it open doors you wouldn't have otherwise had? Any salary bump or was it more of a formality for a promotion you were already on track for?
Bookmarking this. I'm still in the early stages of CPA prep and threads like this are way more useful than generic study guides. The specifics about study guide are particularly helpful — that's the section I've been avoiding.

Quick update: just cleared 81% on my most recent CPA practice set using free cpa pesticide types formulations. Sitting for the real thing in 4 weeks. Feeling cautiously optimistic.
Quick update for anyone following along. I've been grinding practice tests for about six weeks now and just hit 82% on a full-length run yesterday, which felt huge because my first attempt back in April was a rough 61%. The stuff that finally clicked for me was working through the cpa certified pesticide applicator environmental safety and protection question bank over and over until the patterns stopped surprising me. I didn't expect repetition to matter that much, but it really does.
I'm planning to sit the real exam the first week of July. Honestly I wasn't sure it was worth the effort when I started this thread debate in my head, but seeing the scores climb week to week changed my mind. I'll report back after I take it. If you're on the fence, just start doing the questions and let your numbers tell you whether it's clicking.
Just a quick update for anyone following along. I finally buckled down and started doing timed practice sets, and I pulled a 78% on the cpa certified pesticide applicator environmental safety and protection section last night. Two weeks ago I wasn't even cracking 60, so I'm pretty hyped. The environmental safety stuff was killing me at first but it's finally clicking.
I'm planning to sit the real exam in about three weeks. Still nervous, but I figure if I keep the scores trending up I'll be fine. To your actual question, I can't speak to the resume side yet since I'm not certified, but every person I've talked to who has it says it opened doors. That was enough to get me to commit.
