AFM exam – how long did everyone study and what does the test actually cover?

I'm sitting for the Accredited Farm Manager exam in September and trying to figure out a realistic prep timeline. I've been a farm manager for 11 years, mostly row crops and some livestock operations, but I know there's a lot of financial analysis content I'm weaker on. My ASFMRA chapter rep said 3 months is typical but that feels pretty vague.

From what I've gathered, the exam covers farm appraisal, agricultural finance, production economics, and lease arrangements pretty heavily. I'm decent on the agronomic side but the income capitalization and discounted cash flow problems are going to need real work. I've been doing about 45 minutes a day going through the ASFMRA study materials.

Anyone who's taken it recently – does the difficulty match the practice problems in the official guide, or does the real thing go harder? I scored 71% on the sample test they provide and I'm not sure if that's a comfortable margin or if I need to push harder before September.

Also wondering whether the essay portion is graded strictly or if partial credit is realistic. The financial scenario essays look intimidating compared to the multiple choice sections and I'm not sure how much to weight them in my prep time.

The essays do allow partial credit from what my proctor explained, but you need to show your work clearly for the financial calculations. Vague answers, even if directionally correct, tend to get dinged. Practice writing out your full reasoning, not just the final number.

One thing nobody told me – the time pressure is real. I'm a slow reader and almost ran out of time on the financial section. Budget your time per section before you start and stick to it even if you're not 100% sure on a question.

I took it two years ago after 15 years managing a diversified operation. Studied for about 14 weeks, maybe an hour a day, and felt solid going in. The lease analysis questions were trickier than I expected – some had multiple acceptable structures and you had to pick the most appropriate one for the scenario.

71% on the sample test with two months to go is workable, but I'd push that to at least 80% before exam day. The real test felt slightly harder than the official practice materials, especially on the appraisal and market analysis sections. Make sure you know your cap rate calculations cold.
