I passed the AEP exam 2.5 years ago and I'm starting to think about recertification. The BCPE website says 3 years but I want to confirm whether that's 3 years from the date I passed or 3 years from the end of the calendar year. The difference matters because I'm planning a pretty busy Q4 and don't want to scramble at the last minute.
I accumulated PDCs pretty steadily in years 1 and 2 - conference presentations, a few journal reviews, some workplace training I delivered. But I slacked off in year 3 and I'm not sure I have the full 75 points required. Currently tracking about 58 PDCs in my log. Does anyone know if BCPE is strict about the documentation or is there any flexibility if you're close?
Also wondering if retaking the exam is ever worth it vs. the recertification route. I've been doing hands-on ergonomics work for 3 years now and I'm honestly probably better prepared to pass the exam today than I was the first time - scored 71% then. But recertification seems less stressful logistically.
BCPE is pretty strict on documentation but they'll tell you exactly what they need if you ask before submitting. Better to ask upfront than submit something incomplete and go back and forth for weeks.
58 PDCs with 17 points to go isn't a crisis. A single well-documented work project can sometimes cover 10-15 points depending on scope. Look at what you've been doing and see what actually qualifies before you panic.
It's 3 years from your certification date, not the calendar year - call BCPE directly to confirm yours because the website isn't always updated. They're actually pretty responsive by email.
Don't retake the exam unless you have a specific reason to. The recertification route is straightforward if your PDC documentation is solid. I've done it twice and it's a couple hours of paperwork, not a stressful event.
