Finally passed my AEMCA after three attempts — here's what actually helped

So I've been lurking on this forum for about eight months now and figured it was time to actually contribute something useful. I wrote my AEMCA for the third time last Tuesday and passed with a 78%. Not a knockout score, but I'll take it after failing at 61% and then 64% on my first two tries.

What changed this time was honestly just being more systematic. The first two times I was reading the textbook linearly and hoping stuff would stick. This time I found a decent AEMCA practice test online and used it to figure out where my gaps actually were — turns out I was consistently weak on pharmacology and pediatric emergencies, which I'd been skipping over because they made me anxious. Once I knew that, I could target my study guide review toward those sections instead of just re-reading chapters I already knew.

Anyone else find the trauma assessment questions particularly tricky? The way they word the scenario-based ones really threw me off both times I failed. Happy to share more details about my timeline or what resources I used if anyone's prepping right now.

Congrats on passing! Seriously, three attempts takes real persistence. I wrote mine last fall and the trauma section got me too. What helped me was doing timed practice runs — like actually setting a timer and not stopping to look things up. The real exam moves fast and I wasn't used to that pressure. Also, don't underestimate the legal and ethics questions. I assumed they'd be easy and lost a bunch of marks there.

This is so helpful, thank you for posting. I'm writing in about six weeks and I'm honestly terrified. Can I ask roughly how many hours you put in for your third attempt compared to the first two? I've been doing maybe an hour a day but I'm wondering if that's enough. My weak spots are airway management and patient assessment — basically the opposite of pharmacology which I feel pretty solid on.

The pediatric stuff is no joke. Someone on my practical course told me to just memorize the Broselow tape colors and build out from there. Oversimplification maybe, but it gave me an anchor when I was panicking on scenario questions. Good luck to everyone writing soon — it's a tough exam but very passable.
