How long did everyone study for the ACMPE board exam?

I'm sitting for the ACMPE board exam in about 10 weeks and I'm starting to panic a little. I've been in medical practice management for 6 years, so I feel solid on the operational stuff, but the governance and financial management sections are making me nervous. I did really well on an ACMPE practice test I took last month — scored around 74% — but I've heard the real exam is considerably harder and you need a 75 to pass.

I'm currently working through the ACMPE study guide from MGMA and doing about 90 minutes of studying on weeknights, more on weekends. My weakest areas are definitely risk management and the human resources compliance topics. Does anyone have exam tips for those specific sections? I keep getting tripped up on the scenario-based questions where multiple answers seem correct.

Would love to hear how others structured their prep, how many hours total felt right, and whether any third-party resources made a real difference. Feeling cautiously optimistic but would love some reassurance from people who've been through it!

Ten weeks is actually plenty if you stay consistent. I studied about 120 hours total over 14 weeks and passed on my first attempt with an 81. The scenario questions are tough — my best advice is to always think about what protects the organization AND the patient simultaneously. That lens helped me narrow down answers fast. The MGMA study guide is solid but don't skip the ACMPE Body of Knowledge document. It maps directly to what shows up.

Honestly the practice test scores don't correlate super well with how I felt going in. I was consistently hitting 78-80% on practice exams and still found the real thing harder than expected — passed, but barely. The HR and compliance section wrecked me too. One thing that helped: I joined a small study group through a local MGMA chapter and we quizzed each other on case scenarios every other week. Talking through the reasoning out loud was way more useful than just reading.

74% at 10 weeks out is a good spot to be. Don't underestimate the ethics questions — they show up more than you'd think and people consistently underprep for them. Give yourself a full week on just ethics and professionalism content before your exam date.
