Failed ACLS twice — what finally helped me pass on third attempt

I'm a floor nurse with 6 years of experience and I'm embarrassed to admit I failed ACLS certification twice before finally passing last month. The first time I blamed test anxiety. The second time I had no excuse — I just didn't study the algorithms deeply enough. My manager was starting to make comments and I was genuinely stressed about keeping my job on the cardiac step-down unit.

What changed for me on attempt three was drilling the bradycardia and pulseless arrest algorithms until I could recite them in my sleep. I found the FREE ACLS Bradycardia Question and Answers practice set especially useful because the questions are worded the way the actual exam phrases things — not textbook language. I also printed the full ACLS algorithms and taped them to my bathroom mirror. Sounds ridiculous but it worked.

Anyone else struggle with the pharmacology sections? I kept mixing up the atropine dosing versus adenosine. Passed with an 84 this time, which isn't glamorous but I'll absolutely take it. Happy to share my full study schedule if anyone wants it.

The pharmacology tripped me up too, honestly. What helped me was making a table — drug, dose, indication, and when NOT to use it. Atropine vs adenosine confusion is super common because they both deal with rhythm issues but the indications are totally different. I also used the pulseless arrest practice questions and ran through them timed, which forced me to think faster. Took me about 3 weeks of 30 minutes per night to feel solid.

Congrats on passing! I'm a paramedic and even with years of field experience I underestimated the written portion my first time through. The scenarios in the ACLS written test aren't always clean — they'll give you a patient presentation that could fit two algorithms and you have to pick the most appropriate initial intervention. That nuance is what gets people. Did your employer give you any prep time or were you on your own?

The bathroom mirror trick isn't ridiculous at all — I did the exact same thing with the H's and T's for reversible causes. Muscle memory is real. Glad you passed!
