Finally passed my ACL exam after two failed attempts — here's what worked

So I've been sitting on this post for a while because I wanted to make sure I actually passed before sharing. Third time was the charm for me on the ACL certification, and honestly the difference came down to how I was studying, not how much. My first two attempts I just read through the manual and figured that was enough. Spoiler: it wasn't.

What finally clicked was combining the official materials with a solid ACL practice test routine. Doing timed practice questions under exam conditions helped me figure out where I was consistently losing points — for me it was the internal controls and data analytics sections. Once I knew my weak spots I could actually target them instead of re-reading everything equally.

I also found a study guide that broke down the conceptual stuff into plain language rather than just repeating the standards verbatim. That was huge. If anyone's prepping right now and wants to compare notes on exam tips or resources, drop a reply — happy to share what my actual study schedule looked like week by week.

Congrats on passing! The internal controls section got me too on my first attempt. What really helped me was doing a practice test after every major study session instead of saving them all for the end. That way you're reinforcing as you go rather than cramming. Also the data sampling questions are way more conceptual than they look — don't just memorize formulas, make sure you understand the reasoning behind when to use each method.

I'm currently in my second month of studying for this and honestly feeling a little lost. Did you find the official ISACA materials enough or did you have to supplement heavily? I've been reading through everything but when I do practice questions I'm only hitting like 65% which is stressing me out with my exam date coming up in six weeks. What score were you consistently getting on practice exams before you felt ready?

Six weeks is plenty of time if you're already at 65%. I went from 63% to passing in about four weeks once I stopped passive reading and switched to active recall. Do your practice tests timed, review every wrong answer thoroughly, and you'll get there.
