"AB" — how important is this for the AB exam?

If you're already working in this field, the AB exam is testing knowledge you probably use daily. The "AB" sections will feel familiar.

If you're coming in from outside, give yourself an extra 2 weeks and really focus on the practical application questions.

Yes, AB fundamentals show up constantly — but the real thing that caught me off guard was how the questions are worded compared to practice material. AB-specific stuff like lookout responsibilities and reporting also came up more than I expected. If your practice tests are hammering a topic repeatedly, that's usually signal, not noise.

Hindsight take: I spent too long on the theory side and not enough time drilling the scenario-based questions. Those are the ones that trip people up on the actual exam. The ab practice test format helped me more in the final two weeks than anything else I was doing — just repetition until the logic clicked automatically. You're closer than you think if you've already put in 9 full runs.

It's not that any single AB question is high-weight — it's that the whole exam is the AB material, so of course it's in every set you take. Those Rules of the Road questions are the ones that'll actually sink people, because you need close to a 90 on that section specifically, not just the overall pass mark.

So if you're 9 practice tests deep and AB keeps recurring, don't read that as "memorize this one topic harder." Read it as "this is the test." Where I'd put the extra hours: knots and line handling, cargo gear and blocks, and anything involving lights and dayshapes. Those came up cold for me on the real thing and they're the stuff you can't just reason your way through — you either know what two red lights over a vessel means or you don't.

One thing that helped me near the end was drilling questions until the wrong answers stopped looking plausible, not just until I got the right one. If you want more reps in that format the ab practice test is close to the real question style. Take the section scores seriously, especially Rules — that's the one that fails people who otherwise knew the material.
