Finally passed my ABV exam — here's what actually helped me

After two attempts and about four months of studying, I finally got my ABV certification last week. I wanted to share what worked because when I started I couldn't find much practical advice online beyond the official AICPA materials.

The biggest game-changer for me was switching my approach about six weeks out. I'd been reading through the Body of Knowledge cover to cover like it was a textbook, which was basically useless. What actually moved the needle was drilling practice questions every single day and reviewing why I got things wrong. I used a combination of the AICPA sample questions and an ABV practice test platform that had more realistic exam-style scenarios — especially for the income approach and market approach sections, which I kept fumbling. My weak spots were normalization adjustments and valuation discounts, so I made sure to spend extra time there.

For anyone putting together their study guide now: don't underestimate the report-writing section. It's not just theory — they want you to know how a real valuation report gets structured and what standard language belongs where. Happy to answer questions if anyone's in the thick of it.

Congrats! I'm sitting for mine in about eight weeks and the income approach is killing me too. Can you say more about what types of practice questions you found most useful? I've been doing the AICPA ones but they feel almost too straightforward compared to what people describe on the actual exam. Also did you use any specific study guide or mostly piece things together yourself?

The normalization adjustments section tripped me up on my first attempt as well. What finally clicked for me was working through actual case studies rather than abstract definitions — once I could see a real set of financials and identify what needed to be adjusted and why, the concept stopped feeling slippery. Also, don't sleep on the professional standards questions. I underestimated those and paid for it.

Two attempts before passing is more common than people admit — I know at least three people in my firm who needed a second shot. The exam tips I'd add: time yourself strictly during practice, the pacing pressure on test day is real, and go in having reviewed SSVS No. 1 recently.
