Failed ABPANC twice — what finally helped me pass on attempt three

I'm not going to sugarcoat this: I failed the CAPA exam twice before I finally passed last month, and I want to share what actually made the difference because I wish someone had told me this stuff earlier. My first two attempts I was mostly doing flashcards and skimming the ABPANC content outline, scoring like 68-70% on practice questions and thinking I was ready. I wasn't.

What changed everything was being really honest about WHERE I was weak. For me it was pharmacology and the postoperative assessment criteria — I kept second-guessing myself on priority questions. I started using a structured ABPANC practice test routine, doing timed 50-question blocks and tracking every wrong answer by domain. That pattern-recognition piece is huge for this exam specifically.

I also finally got a proper study guide that mapped directly to the current ABPANC blueprint (not just generic perianesthesia content). Spent about 10-12 weeks, roughly 8 hours a week. Passed with a 412. If you're preparing for CAPA or CPAN, happy to answer questions — this community helped me a lot and I want to give back.

Thank you for posting this — I'm on my second attempt prep right now and this hits close to home. I totally underestimated the pharmacology section the first time. The 'timed blocks by domain' approach is something I hadn't really committed to. Quick question: did you do full-length mock exams in the final weeks or just the shorter blocks throughout?

The exam tips around tracking wrong answers by content domain are spot on. I passed CPAN two years ago and that's exactly what clicked for me too. One thing I'd add: don't ignore the ASPAN standards documents. A surprising number of questions hinge on specific phase I vs phase II discharge criteria that textbooks gloss over. The ABPANC study guide I used had a solid section on those and it paid off.

Congrats on passing!! A 412 is a great score. For anyone else reading this who's early in their prep — start with the official ABPANC content outline and map your study hours to the domain percentages. Weighted studying saved me at least 3-4 weeks of unfocused reading.
