Finally passed ABLE after two attempts — here's what actually helped

Okay so I want to share my experience because I was seriously struggling to find good info about this exam when I started. I'm a literacy educator in Ohio and my district basically gave me three months to get ABLE certified or lose my adult ed position. No pressure, right? First attempt I scored a 71 — passing is 75 — and I was devastated. I didn't even know where to find a decent ABLE practice test that actually matched the real thing.

Second time around I completely changed my approach. I spent about 6-7 hours a week for two months going through a structured study guide instead of just reviewing random materials. The instructional design and assessment sections killed me the first time, so I drilled those specifically. Also spent a lot of time on the workforce readiness competencies because those questions are sneaky — they sound straightforward but the wording trips you up.

Passed with an 82 this time. Happy to answer questions if anyone's going through this. What study resources are you all using?

The instructional design section is no joke. I passed on my first try but barely — came in at a 76. What I did was make flashcards for all the major adult learning theories because they show up constantly in different forms. Knowles, Freire, the whole crew. Also don't underestimate the technology integration questions, way more of those than I expected. Good luck to everyone studying right now.

Congrats on passing! I'm in a similar boat — taking mine in six weeks and honestly the assessment domain is what scares me most. I've been using a study guide I found through my state literacy council but it feels pretty thin on practice questions. Did you find that working through exam tips for the scenario-based questions helped? Those situational judgment style items always feel like two answers are equally right.

Thanks for posting this. I've been lurking on this forum for weeks trying to find real talk about ABLE and most threads just say 'study hard' lol. Six hours a week for two months sounds doable. Starting my prep this weekend.
