CGAP exam domains – which ones are hard vs which just look scary

Passed the CGAP about three months ago after 11 weeks of prep. I've seen a lot of posts asking about difficulty and the framing is usually off – it's not that any one domain is brutally hard, it's that the public sector context means you can't apply private sector auditing intuition and expect the right answer.

I averaged about 90 minutes a day on study materials plus practice questions. The exam is 115 questions and you need to pass all four domains independently. My weakest area was Standards and Guidance because I'd mostly been working under IIA standards and the government-specific adaptations weren't second nature to me. I probably spent 40% of my total prep time on that domain alone.

The Fraud and Special Investigations section looked intimidating but was actually the one I felt best about on exam day. The questions are scenario-based and if you understand red flags and documentation requirements you're in decent shape – I was scoring around 82% on practice questions for that domain in my last two weeks.

Audit Planning and Fieldwork was denser than I expected. There's real specificity about government audit procedures that doesn't show up in the CIA exam content, and the legal framework questions pulled from Yellow Book material I hadn't touched in years. Don't skip GAGAS.

The domain pass requirement is what catches people off guard. You can't compensate for a weak domain with a strong one since each passes independently. Run an honest self-assessment of each domain early so you know where to front-load your time.

How many practice questions were you doing per day toward the end of your prep? I'm 6 weeks out and doing about 40 to 50 per day but I'm not sure that's enough volume to build the feel I need for the actual exam.

Yellow Book (GAGAS) content is essential and a lot of people underestimate it. I went into my first attempt thinking my CIA would cover me and I was wrong. Passed on my second try after spending three dedicated weeks on GAGAS chapters specifically.
