Finally passed ABAT after two attempts — here's what actually helped

So I've been working in auto body repair for about six years and my shop manager basically told me I needed to get ABAT certified or I wasn't going to see a raise this year. Fair enough, honestly. First time I sat for it back in February I went in pretty confident and completely bombed the structural analysis section. Like, 62% when I needed a 75. Humbling experience.

Second attempt I actually buckled down. I spent about three weeks with a solid ABAT study guide that broke down the I-CAR standards and damage analysis sections in a way that actually made sense to me. The thing that really moved the needle was working through an ABAT practice test almost every night — not just checking answers but going back through the ones I missed and understanding the reasoning. Timing yourself matters too, I kept running out of time on the electrical diagnostic questions.

Passed with an 81% last month. If anyone else is prepping right now, happy to share what resources I used or answer questions about what the test actually focuses on. The exam tips I picked up from this community last year definitely helped me stay on track the second time around.

This is super helpful, I'm scheduled for mine in July and I'm lowkey terrified. I've got maybe 8 years in the trade but book knowledge and hands-on are totally different things. My weak spot is definitely the estimating section. Did you find that came up a lot on the actual exam? I've heard it varies depending on which version you get. Also how far in advance did you start seriously studying?

Congrats man, two attempts is nothing to be ashamed of — that structural section is no joke. I passed mine last spring and honestly the practice tests were what saved me too. I probably ran through four or five full-length ones before I felt comfortable with the pacing. The real exam throws some weird scenario questions at you that you won't see coming unless you've practiced under pressure. What guide were you using if you don't mind me asking?

The timing thing is real. I almost didn't finish my first attempt because I spent too long second-guessing myself on the welding questions. Practice under timed conditions from day one, not just the week before. Seriously changes how calm you feel in the room.
