How did you all prepare for the AAPPL? Feeling totally lost

So I have my AAPPL coming up in about six weeks and honestly I don't even know where to start. I've been studying Spanish for three years in school but this is my first time taking a proficiency test that actually matters — my college is using the score for placement and I really don't want to end up back in intro-level courses.

I downloaded a couple random PDFs but they feel outdated and nothing really matches the format I've seen described online. Someone in my class mentioned an AAPPL practice test that mimics the actual task types, especially the interpersonal listening section which I'm most nervous about. Has anyone found resources that actually helped? I'm aiming for Intermediate High at minimum.

Also curious how long people typically spend prepping. I can realistically do about 45 minutes a day on weekdays. Would love any AAPPL study guide recommendations or exam tips from people who've already been through it — especially for the writing tasks since my grammar is shakier than my speaking.

I took the AAPPL last spring for Chinese and the interpersonal tasks genuinely surprised me — they're not like anything on a typical school test. What helped me most was recording myself responding to prompts out loud, even just on my phone. Timing yourself matters a lot. I also spent about two weeks focused purely on listening before switching to writing. Ended up hitting Advanced Low which I was really happy with.

Six weeks is honestly pretty solid if you're consistent. I crammed in three weeks for my Spanish AAPPL and passed but I wouldn't recommend it. The writing section trips people up because you're expected to sustain a argument, not just describe things. My tip: practice writing 150-word opinion responses every other day. Also look up the ACTFL proficiency descriptors for your target level — knowing exactly what Intermediate High looks like changed how I studied completely.

Don't sleep on the presentational writing tasks — that's where most people lose points they didn't expect to. Spell-check won't save you if your paragraph structure is weak. Give yourself at least one full mock run under timed conditions before test day. Good luck, six weeks is doable!
