Finally passed my AAFCS exam after two attempts — here's what worked

So I've been sitting on this post for a while because I wanted to make sure I actually passed before sharing anything. Got my results last week and I'm officially credentialed! Took me two tries though, and the second time around I completely changed my approach.

First attempt I went in pretty confident — I have a master's in family and consumer sciences and figured my coursework would carry me. Scored a 68, needed a 75. Embarrassing, honestly. The problem was I hadn't touched some of the financial counseling and housing/environment domains in years and they hit those hard. Second time I spent about 6 weeks using a solid AAFCS study guide, worked through every domain systematically, and did timed AAFCS practice test sessions twice a week. That repetition under pressure made a huge difference — I went from freezing on nutrition policy questions to actually feeling comfortable with them.

Happy to share my full breakdown of what I studied and for how long. The exam tips that helped me most were around time management since some of the scenario-based questions are genuinely long. Anyone else in the middle of prep right now?

Congrats!! I'm scheduled for mine in 8 weeks and honestly terrified. The domain weighting is what gets me — I keep reading conflicting info about how much of the test is human development vs. personal finance. Did you find one area was significantly heavier than the others? I've been putting most of my time into consumer economics but now I'm second-guessing myself.

Two attempts is nothing to be embarrassed about — I know people who've taken it three times. The scenario questions tripped me up too on my first pass. One thing my study group swore by was reading the answer choices before the scenario, which sounds backwards but it genuinely helps you know what details to look for. Also make sure you're not skipping the housing and interior design domain thinking it's easy. It's not.

This is so encouraging to read. I'm about 3 weeks out and been grinding AAFCS practice test sets every night. Bookmarking this thread for the exam tips section — the part about financial counseling domains is exactly what I needed to hear. Good luck to everyone still in the thick of it!
