7D pupil transport license — what does the Mass exam actually cover?

I'm a school bus aide looking to upgrade to a 7D license so I can drive the smaller accessible vans for our district. My supervisor said the process is fairly straightforward but I'm not finding a lot of detail on what's actually on the knowledge test. I've driven a CDL school bus for 4 years so I'm not starting from zero, but the 7D is a different animal — no CDL required, different rules, different vehicle categories.

From what I've pieced together, the test covers MassDOT pupil transport regulations, Chapter 90 vehicle operation rules, and special needs student transport protocols. But I'm unsure how deep it goes into each area. Does anyone who's taken it recently know whether it's mostly regulation recall or does it get into situational judgment scenarios?

I've been using the Mass 7D License Practice Test on a prep site to get familiar with question formats and it's been useful for identifying gaps — particularly around wheelchair securement procedures and emergency evacuation protocols. I'd like to walk in scoring at least 85% on practice sets before I schedule the actual test.

I took it in March. The passing score in Massachusetts is 80% and the test has 40 questions last I checked. It's not brutal but don't go in cold — the securement and evacuation questions are specific enough to trip you up if you've only skimmed the manual.

Scheduling tip: the RMV locations that handle 7D testing can have 3-4 week waits. Book your appointment before you finish studying so you're not ready and waiting around.

If you've got 4 years of CDL bus experience the regulatory overlap will feel familiar. The main differences are the Chapter 7D-specific requirements and the IEP and medical transport protocols. Focus there.

The test is mostly regulation recall but there are a handful of situational questions mixed in — like what to do if a student has a medical episode during transport. Know your emergency protocols cold.

I passed on my first try after about 2 weeks of studying. Wheelchair securement is definitely on there — more questions than I expected.
