During a structure fire, superheated gases and smoke rise from the fire on the ground floor and spread rapidly to the upper floors and attic space. What is the primary mode of heat transfer responsible for this movement?
Answer: Convection
Convection is the transfer of heat through the movement of fluids, which includes gases like air and smoke. In a fire, hot gases are less dense than the surrounding cooler air, causing them to rise. This movement creates convection currents that carry heat and smoke upwards throughout a building.
A firefighter is using a Halligan bar to pry open a door, with the door frame acting as the fulcrum. The firefighter applies effort to the handle, and the adze end of the tool applies force to the door (the load). In this configuration, where the fulcrum is between the effort and the load, which class of lever is being used?
Answer: Class 1 Lever
A Class 1 lever is defined by having the fulcrum located between the applied effort and the load being moved. A seesaw or a crowbar are classic examples. In this scenario, the door frame is the fulcrum, the firefighter's push is the effort, and the door is the load, fitting the Class 1 definition.
A rescue team needs to lift a 600-pound piece of debris. They use a rope and pulley system that has 4 rope segments directly supporting the load. Ignoring friction, what is the minimum effort (pulling force) required to lift the debris?
Answer: 150 pounds
The theoretical mechanical advantage of a pulley system is equal to the number of rope segments supporting the load. To find the required effort, divide the weight of the load by the mechanical advantage. In this case: 600 pounds / 4 supporting rope segments = 150 pounds of effort.
In the gear train shown, Gear A has 20 teeth and rotates clockwise. Gear B has 10 teeth, and Gear C has 20 teeth. Which of the following statements accurately describes the rotation of Gear C?
Answer: Rotates clockwise, at the same speed as Gear A.
When gears mesh, they rotate in opposite directions. Since Gear A is clockwise, Gear B must be counter-clockwise. Since Gear B is counter-clockwise, Gear C must be clockwise. Because Gear A and Gear C have the same number of teeth (20), they will rotate at the same speed.
A pumper truck is supplying water to a hoseline. If the firefighter at the nozzle switches from a wide fog pattern to a straight stream without changing the flow rate (GPM), what happens to the water's velocity as it exits the nozzle?
Answer: It increases.
According to the principle of continuity for fluids, if the flow rate (gallons per minute) remains constant, a decrease in the cross-sectional area of the opening will cause the fluid's velocity to increase. A straight stream nozzle has a smaller opening than a wide fog pattern, so the water must speed up to move the same volume of water through it.
When an aerial ladder truck is positioned on a hill, its stability is a primary concern. To maximize stability, where should the vehicle's center of gravity be positioned relative to its base of support?
Answer: As low as possible.
An object's stability is increased by lowering its center of gravity and widening its base of support. A lower center of gravity makes an object less likely to tip over when subjected to external forces or when placed on an incline.
