EVITP EV Technology Fundamentals 5

Question 1

In the United States, Level 1 EV charging typically uses which supply voltage?

Accepted Answer

120 V AC

Answer

Level 1 charging uses a standard 120 V household receptacle.

Question 2

An EV uses 300 Wh per mile and has 60 kWh of usable battery capacity. What is its approximate range?

Accepted Answer

200 miles

Answer

60,000 Wh ÷ 300 Wh/mile = 200 miles.

Question 3

A 48 A, 240 V Level 2 EVSE (about 11.5 kW) is connected to a vehicle whose onboard charger is rated at 7.2 kW. What will the charging rate be?

Accepted Answer

7.2 kW

Answer

AC charging is limited by the lower of the EVSE rating and the vehicle's onboard charger capacity.

Question 4

What is the function of the traction inverter in a battery electric vehicle?

Accepted Answer

It converts DC battery power to AC to drive the traction motor

Answer

Most EV traction motors are AC machines, so the inverter converts the battery's DC into variable-frequency AC.
