EQAO - Education Quality and Accountability Office Scoring and Achievement Levels Questions and Answers 1

Question 1

A Grade 6 student's EQAO results indicate they are at 'Level 3'. Which of the following statements best describes what this achievement level signifies?

Accepted Answer

The student has demonstrated knowledge and skills with considerable effectiveness and has met the provincial standard.

Answer

EQAO defines Level 3 as the provincial standard. A student achieving Level 3 has demonstrated the required knowledge and skills with 'considerable effectiveness,' indicating they are well-prepared for the next grade.

Question 2

A school principal is reviewing the school's overall EQAO performance. A significant number of students have scored at 'Level 2' in mathematics. What is the most accurate interpretation of a 'Level 2' score?

Accepted Answer

Students are approaching the provincial standard, demonstrating the required knowledge and skills with some effectiveness.

Answer

Level 2 indicates that a student is 'approaching the provincial standard' and has demonstrated the specified knowledge and skills with 'some effectiveness'. This suggests that while there is a foundation of understanding, further support may be needed to fully meet curriculum expectations.

Question 3

Which of the following EQAO assessments reports student achievement using a 'successful' or 'not yet successful' outcome instead of the four achievement levels?

Accepted Answer

Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT)

Answer

Because the OSSLT is a graduation requirement, it is scored differently than the other assessments. Students are evaluated based on whether they have met the minimum competency, resulting in a 'successful' or 'not yet successful' designation, rather than Levels 1 through 4.

Question 4

An Individual Student Report (ISR) shows that a student achieved 'Level 4' on the primary division assessment. What does this level of achievement suggest about the student's performance?

Accepted Answer

The student's achievement surpasses the provincial standard.

Answer

Level 4 is the highest level of achievement on EQAO assessments. It indicates that the student has demonstrated the required knowledge and skills with a high degree of effectiveness, thereby surpassing the provincial standard (Level 3).

Question 5

A teacher is explaining EQAO results to a parent whose child scored 'Below Level 1'. What is the most accurate description of this result?

Accepted Answer

The student has not demonstrated sufficient achievement of curriculum expectations to be assigned a level.

Answer

The 'Below Level 1' designation means that the student has not demonstrated sufficient achievement of the curriculum expectations on the assessment. This is distinct from Level 1, which indicates 'limited effectiveness'.
